What "100% of Your Donation Goes to Charity" Really Means

The idea that all donations given to nonprofits will be benefitting the nonprofit itself has been surprisingly prevalent in our culture; however, this is often not the case. Although some organizations are able to make it true due to generous partners, this concept is an oversimplification of what happens with most corporate giving programs. For example, donors who choose to donate through a payroll system like Benevity or JustGiving may not realize that even though their donations are earmarked for a certain charity, those companies take up anywhere from 5-7% as an administrative fee. Additionally, a percentage of their donation may be used by the company providing the service to cover operational costs such as staff salaries and marketing expenses.

Charitable donations are often made with no thought of the costs involved and any perceived administrative charges that could be absorbed by the charity. By understanding the full scope of costs associated with fundraising efforts and donation processes, donors can make informed decisions and avoid financially burdening charities that are already without ample funding support. Simply changing donation tactics or adjusting timing may mean fewer additional costs incurred, allowing your contribution to go further in helping those in need.

Transparency is the Best Policy

Transparency is an essential trait for any charity or nonprofit if it wishes to win the trust of potential donors. Too many questions have been raised about where money donated to charitable causes actually ends up, meaning that organizations must take a proactive approach to proving their worth and trustworthiness.

Clear evidence in regard to how donations are spent is crucial. This means providing key information such as what proportion goes towards administration costs or which projects are being funded by the charity’s donations. Such open reporting will ensure that public instinct drives them towards more reliable and trustworthy organizations when it comes to giving away their hard-earned money; leading to an increased amount of funding made available for those who need it most. There are already many helpful organizations that advise on detailed financial breakdowns of different nonprofit organizations; further highlighting the importance of transparency and particularly within this sector.

The most effective way to ensure that all donations are being put to good use is for donation platforms to be completely transparent about their administrative fees and any other associated costs. Doing so gives donors the confidence they need when deciding which organization will benefit from their contribution. Ultimately, this boosts the reputation of the charity itself, as well as any partnering giving services, by highlighting their commitment to minimizing both donor and charity expenses. By outlining exactly how much of your donation will go directly towards a charity's cause, these organizations can demonstrate their dedication to making sure funds are allocated efficiently and effectively.

How These Claims Can Confuse Donors

It is easy to see why the promise of ‘100% of your donation goes to charity’ can be so attractive – it allows donors to stay in control and feel confident that their money is going towards a good cause. Unfortunately, this does not always tell the full story; as already discussed, a percentage of donations may go toward administrative costs or fundraising efforts. This means that those who donate are not always aware of how much they are actually giving away. For example, when using a credit card for donations, the statement will display the amount donated but without any indication that a certain portion was taken for processing fees or other costs. This can lead to confusion as donors might think they are donating $100 when, in fact, only $90 of their donation is going towards the charity.

Another issue that can arise from such claims is the lack of specificity about which organizations are being supported. While it may be true that ‘100% of your donation goes to charity’, this does not necessarily mean that all donations are going to an effective or well-run nonprofit organization. With no reference made to where the money will be spent, donors may find themselves unknowingly giving away their money to a charity with questionable operations and practices.

How are Donated Funds Distributed?

Donated funds can be challenging to distribute efficiently and effectively. The third-party vendors that companies use to manage their charitable programs often do not have the capability or resources to send money directly to nonprofits. This means they must rely on a patchwork of distribution partners, which introduces additional complexity and cost.

Furthermore, these providers typically need to stay up-to-date on changing regulatory issues to ensure companies and their people are not exposed legally when donating. There may also be challenges with uncashed checks or stale funds that need to be accounted for in order for organizations to receive the full donated amount intended for them. Managing and distributing donated funds is no easy task. Companies rely on third-party vendors with expertise in this area for assistance but ultimately could be faced with various complex scenarios beyond their control such as regulatory issues, cross-border giving costs, or handling uncashed checks/stale funds.

An example of this comes from a well-known donations platform: "Benevity has a transaction fee-based revenue model, which means that when a donation is made, although donors receive a tax receipt for 100% of their donation amount, there is an administrative charge to our charitable foundation partners of 5-7% before the funds are distributed to the cause(s). The foundation pays a royalty for the use of our software platform out of this admin fee and in return, all aspects of processing the donations, including tax receipts, corporate matching, etc. are done on an aggregated, outsourced basis" (Benevity Just BeCause Blog).

What's the Solution?

First of all, doing your own research is always encouraged. Finding platforms that you feel comfortable using for your donations is entirely up to you. However, it is essential to ensure that the funds are going toward a reputable and worthwhile cause. To do so, donors should look for donation platforms with transparent fees and clear communication.

For instance, research the average cost of fundraising for charities – if you’re donating to one that seems to require an excessive amount of overhead expenses or charges a high rate for processing fees, this should be considered a red flag. Additionally, check whether or not donations will qualify as tax-exempt for the charity you’re giving to; some may not be registered as qualified nonprofits by the IRS and therefore may not have the same benefits or protections. It’s also important to be aware of the fees associated with credit card payments and other non-cash donations. If you’re using a credit card, for instance, your statement may show a different amount than what was originally charged because of processing and administrative costs.

Finally, look at the charity’s mission and how they spend their funds. Many will have detailed explanations on their website about how donations are used; if you don’t feel as though they’re using funds in an effective manner or that you don’t agree with their cause, it may be wise to give your donation elsewhere.
